Trains, planes and no internet!

In the past few months, I feel like I’ve circumnavigated the entire globe. Started off in a new office in London, then off to see a client in Qingdao, China. Followed by a week in Bristol, Worcester, Oxford and then a few days in Maastricht, the Netherlands.

Going to China was an experience, but not the one I was expecting. Despite never having heard of Qingdao, I was expecting something slightly less built up than this.

The city, like many other places in CHina, is growing at a rate of knots! Many building sites I saw at the beginning of the week were halfway to becoming fully fledged skyscrapers by the time I left. If there’s one place you’re looking for new business right now, China is probably the place. I spent a week with my client working on all kinds of fabulous plans, so hopefully we’ll be able to realise them very soon.

Sadly, China’s internet is still very restricted. I was given false hope on my first day with very slow access to Facebook, Twitter and Google, only for it to disappear for the rest of the week. It’s strange just how much lack of internet does your head in (for a while at least)

Bristol was a bit more relaxing and didn’t involve 14 hours on a plane (hooray!), plus a got to see a lovely friend I haven’t seen for ages. You know who you are, and I love you and your family to bits x

Bristol are great adopters of colour. You can tell just by looking at their great choice of masonry paint!

Worcester welcomed us with open arms for a relaxing (table tennis fuelled) weekend, only for it to end with a flat tyre prompting an unscheduled stop in Oxford! Having not been there for a good while, I’d forgotten how much it love it. That and the fact that they have a pub called The Four Candles (yes, it’s a Wetherspoons, don’t judge me, it was handy whilst waiting for a new tyre)…

Now visiting a potential client in Maastricht was enlightening. Maastricht itself is quite pretty (and equally gorgeous people too) but it does feel a bit like a ghost town, or possibly 28 Days Later. Maybe it’s all about timing, but I hope to go back soon and see Maastricht in its full glory.

Given that I’ve barely set foot in my own house recently, I hope you’ll forgive me for the lack of posts! I promise to make up for it. Tis design season don’t ya know…

Lovely new location from Shoot Factory – Kilburn, London

Check out this lovely new property from Shoot Factory called Teignmouth, located in Kilburn, London.

This ultra modern conversion of an edwardian house has easy access from rear and easy parking.  There is an extra-wide double-volume glass wall, huge open plan living space with kitchen.

The kitchen features ultra modern appliances + island with inline hob, which is ideal for cookery demos. 

There is a large master bedroom suite with dressing room and ensuite bath / wet room with rain shower and freestanding bath. In addition there are 2 further bedrooms + bathrooms + steam room .

Mid Century Modern Show – Dulwich, March 2013

I’ve always wanted to show to the Mid Century Modern Show in Dulwich for a number of reasons:

I’m completely obsessed with Mid Century Modern

Like most people my age, we grew up around Mid Century Modern objects in our grandparents’ homes, therefore it’s rooted deep in my consciousness

How can you not love the idea of being surrounded by Dansette record players, Scandinavian glassware and Danish teak sideboards?!

Sadly, despite the best laid plans, I’ve never made it to a show…until today!

Hubby decided to buy me an early birthday present from People Will Always Need Plates. It was very difficult to choose just one, but I am very glad to add this beauty to my collection.

The show itself is huge! I’m probably quite lucky that I had hubby in tow, otherwise I would have been there for days and £000s lighter. I owe the organisers, Petra and Lucy a huge thank you for organising this amazing pre birthday treat, full of delight and inspiration. I simply cannot wait to attend the next show at Lord’s in May!

Top Pinterest Apps for Interior Design

As well as being a designer, I am also a massive geek (and proud!) As a result, I’m always keen to test our new apps as they appear, to help with my design work. I also happen to be a Pinterest addict, so when my favourite worlds collide, I’m a happy bunny!

If This Then That (IFTTT)

This app is truly amazing and yet to simple. Imagine that if every time you pinned an image, it was also automatically saved to a folder in your Dropbox. Or maybe every time you emailed your self one of those handy (i.e. always getting lost) ‘note to self’, it was automatically synced to your Evernote. Basically, IFTTT create scripts based on a very simple set of rules i.e. IF I add a pin to Pinterest THEN THAT goes to x folder on Dropbox.

It’s been a huge help to me already, as I want to put a bunch of images in a Blurb booklet, so I can show my clients the inspiration behind their projects. Saves me having to right-click on each one individually and spending days saving images. There are 59 apps you can connect between so far including the usual Facebook, LinkedIm, Twitter etc. NOTE – Pinterest is NOT one of the apps, but you can use the RSS feed instead i.e. http://pinterest.com/peacheydesign/feed.rss. Also, you can’t seem to run it on individual boards. The sooner that Pinterest open up their public API the better!

Alpine Photo Tile for Pinterest

Want to show lots of Pinterest photos on your WordPress blog at once? Alpine Photo Tile is for you! You simply install the plugin through your WordPress dashboard, enter your Pinterest user name and (optionally) the board, you want to showcase. The plugin then generates a shortcode, which you copy and paste directly into your blog post or page.

Only disadvantage is that there doesn’t appear to be an option to resize your photos, so whilst they might all be the same width, the height is all over the shop!

PinReach

Last but by no means least is PinReach. This particular app provides handy analytics on Pinterest so you can find out what your most popular pins and boards are. It’s also rather reminiscent of Klout, as you get an influence ‘score’ (mine’s 46, which is fairly average), which PinReach say they won’t detail the exact formula of (yet). What they do say though is ‘the goal should be to produce and share great content on Pinterest – the better the content, the more likely it is that your followers, customers, and random users will be willing to interact with your pins.’ Here here! Or you can just keep on randomly pinning like me.

Heart Home Mag – Spring 2013

The Spring Edition of Heart Home Mag is out! These images really make me want to move to a light filled Scandinavian country and paint everything white! Love the colour pops with the balloons, but most of all the plates. My plate collection is manifesting itself very slowly, mainly because I’m slow at collecting, but also due to PWANP archiving their collection of beautiful plates! They reassure me that they haven’t disappeared though, and will pop up at the wonderful Mid Century Modern Fair that hubby is taking me to as a birthday treat next Sunday 17th March.

Introducing : Gonçalo Campos

Gonçalo Campos is a London-based, Portuguese product designer. Given my current obsession with black/white/wood/natural combinations, I’ve fallen in love with his beautiful Rolha cork stool/side table.

He’s got some other beautiful pieces too, including the Sorri Lounge Chair and a fabulous bookcase on wheels from his Rustic Collection.
